🐾 How to Measure Your Dog’s Neck for a Collar

Steve Rider |

At Delta Canine, we know that precision matters—especially when it comes to gear that supports working and training dogs. A properly fitted collar ensures comfort, control, and safety. Follow this guide to measure your dog’s neck accurately using metric units.

📐 What You’ll Need

  • Soft measuring tape (marked in centimetres)
  • A calm dog standing upright

1. Position Your Dog
Ensure your dog is standing naturally on all fours. They should be relaxed—not straining, sitting, or panting heavily.

2. Locate the Collar Zone
Identify the base of the neck, just above the shoulders and below the head. This is where the collar will sit.

3. Measure the Neck
Wrap the measuring tape around this part of the neck.
✔️ The tape should be snug but not tight.
✔️ You should be able to comfortably slide two fingers between the tape and your dog’s neck.

4. Record the Measurement
Note the circumference in centimetres (cm).
If using string, mark the overlap point and measure it with a ruler.

Collars are measured from the roller at the buckle to the middle hole (which allows for some overlap).

Please measure carefully, as we create your collar according to your specifications. We can make adjustments if it is too large, but if it is too small, we cannot fix it without remaking the entire collar. While we are happy to make adjustments, please note that if we receive inaccurate measurements, we may charge a small fee for the alterations. Additionally, if the collar is too small, we may need to charge a pro-rated amount for remaking it. Thank you for your understanding!
